What Is UPC

The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a 12-digit barcode used primarily in North America for product identification. In music, UPC identifies an album, EP or single as a commercial product.

UPC Structure

A UPC-A code consists of 12 digits:

  • First digit — Number system digit
  • Digits 2-6 — Manufacturer identification number
  • Digits 7-11 — Product identification number
  • Digit 12 — Check digit (calculated using modulo 10 algorithm)

What Is EAN-13

The European Article Number (EAN-13) is the international equivalent of UPC, using 13 digits. Most music distribution platforms accept either UPC or EAN. An EAN-13 can be derived from a UPC-A by adding a leading zero.

UPC in Music

Every commercial music release requires a UPC/EAN code:

  • Albums, EPs and singles each need their own UPC.
  • Digital and physical versions of the same release can share a UPC.
  • Different formats (vinyl, CD, digital) of the same release may use different UPCs.
  • UPC is used by retailers and streaming platforms for product identification.

How to Get UPC

UPC codes are typically assigned by your distributor. When you release through Zaventra Music Group, UPC codes are automatically generated and assigned to your releases.

Independent artists can purchase UPC codes from GS1 (the global standards organization) or through authorized resellers.

UPC vs ISRC

  • UPC identifies the release (album, EP or single).
  • ISRC identifies each individual recording within the release.
  • An album with 12 tracks has 1 UPC and 12 ISRC codes.
