What Is Content ID
Content ID is YouTube's automated system that scans uploaded videos against a database of copyrighted content. When a match is found, the copyright owner can choose to monetize, track or block the video.
How It Works
- YouTube creates a digital fingerprint (audio or video) of your content.
- Every uploaded video is compared against this database.
- When a match is detected, an automatic claim is generated.
- The copyright owner decides the action: monetize, track or block.
Setting Up Content ID
Content ID access is typically provided through your distributor or a specialized Content ID service. Zaventra Music Group offers Content ID protection for distributed releases.
Requirements for Content ID:
- You must own or control the rights to the content.
- The content must be original (no third-party samples without clearance).
- The content must meet YouTube's quality standards.
Claims vs Copyright Strikes
- Content ID Claim — Automated match. The copyright owner monetizes, tracks or blocks. Does not affect the uploader's channel.
- Copyright Strike — Manual DMCA takedown request. Three strikes result in channel termination.
Monetization Options
- Monetize — Ads run on the video, revenue goes to the copyright owner.
- Track — See analytics for where your content is used.
- Block — Prevent the video from being viewed in specific regions or globally.
Common Issues
- False claims from automated scanning.
- Claims on content you own or have rights to.
- Disputing incorrect claims through YouTube's dispute process.
