Master Recording Ownership & Assignment Policy
Last Updated: October 19, 2026 • Published by Zaventra Music Group Operations
Policy Summary: Clear legal distinction between retaining 100% master ownership and granting exclusive distribution rights.
1. Fundamental Distinction: Ownership vs. Distribution License
Zaventra Music Group operates under the clear principle that distribution rights and master ownership are distinct legal concepts:
- Exclusive Distribution License: You grant ZMG the exclusive right to ingest, deliver, monetize, and administer sound recordings across digital platforms for an agreed term and territory. You retain 100% of the underlying master copyright.
- Master Ownership Assignment: Actual ownership of the master recording sound copyright transfers to Zaventra Industries Private Limited ONLY when a separate, explicit, signed written assignment agreement is executed.
2. Master Ownership Retained by Artist or Label
In the standard distribution model, the artist or record label retains full legal ownership of the master sound recordings. Zaventra acts as your authorized distribution and digital rights administrator. Upon contractual expiration or valid agreement termination, distribution rights revert in accordance with the signed agreement.
3. Requirements for Valid Master Rights Transfer
Where master ownership is intentionally assigned to ZMG (e.g., under direct label buyouts or co-production agreements), the transfer must be documented by a formal assignment specifying:
- Recording title, version, artist, and assigned ISRC.
- Clear financial consideration and effective transfer date.
- Territorial scope (worldwide or specific territories) and term/perpetuity.
- Reversion or termination conditions, where contractually agreed.
